Had to knock off one star for the incompetent editing that allowed "deep base voice" on page 27 (while page 31 correctly has "a bass chorus fills the air"). Come on, Smithsonian! My kids really enjoy learning about animals so we read many books in this genre. I love that this Smithsonian series packs so much information into a picture book story style book. I really love the detail illustrations and that the books are willing to face he facts. Yes, some animals eat other animals. This is a simple fact and in no way is it dark or twisted. There’s lots to love about frogs and much to learn about their habits!

Bullfrog at Magnolia Circle is a picture book about 30 pages long with one or two small paragraphs on each page. It starts out with spring beginning, the bullfrog emerging from the winter, and beautiful imagery of the swampy environment, which is accompanied by illustrations that seem like a mix of rich and vivid water color and acrylic. Throughout the book, the bullfrog goes through all the processes of finding food, avoiding becoming food to predators, and croaking to find a mates while preparing to fight other males to do so. The vocabulary in the book is full of new words about flogs and their habitat that most students would not know, such as "amphibian," "bayou," "crustacean," "tadpole," and "tympanum." All of these are in a very short glossary in the book, adding an extra educational element to the story. Each illustration is a double page spread with vivid colors and unique detail of the bumblebees and their habitat, which adds an extra level of insight to what the life of a bullfrog looks like. This book is quite diverse in it's potential classroom use. It would be an excellent book to use during a science section about amphibians, animal reproduction, and various types of animal habitats based around seasons. But beyond the typical reasoning behind the book, there are many other casual uses for it. A perfect event-based use for this book in the classroom would be if a student found a frog out at recess or down by there creek over the weekend. It would be an interesting classroom experience to read it out loud so the students get a better understanding of the life of a bullfrog. Overall, this book is very enjoyable because it is informative but in a personal story way.

Personal Reaction: I thought this book was okay. I did not love it though. The book talked a lot about Bullfrog eating other animals for his meals, as well as almost getting attacked by a bird for her meal. I prefer books that have a happier mood, and this one really focused on survival and doing whatever it takes (even if it means eating other animals, even a smaller frog!!) to survive. The story line was easy for me to follow about Bullfrog surviving and his mating habits, however, it was not Personal Reaction: I thought this book was okay. I did not love it though. Purposes: -1st and 2nd grade (maybe 3rd grade because of extremely advanced and strong vocabulary) Read Aloud Enrichment: -This could introduce a section of science focusing on life and the processes of how tadpoles transform to frogs and their survival tactics as well as their mating rituals -Could be read if the classroom is learning about wetland landscapes; listening to the descriptive words about the landscape as well as the detailed illustrations from the swampland. Curriculum: -Very strong vocabulary: bayou, rumbles, emerged, retreat, bulging, duckweed, crustacean, cascades, illuminates, sphinx, heron, unsuspecting, departing, deposit -Onomatopoeia: squawk

Personal Reaction- A fun story about a frog that is trying to find his place and also a soul mate. Really great imagery used and a fun display of characters to get a good message across. The frog is funny and also doesn't let anything get in his way. Purposes: A great story for K-2nd graders. A story about love and perseverance. The frog goes through a lot of difficult tasks on his journey to fitting in and finding his soul mate. The journey shows that he is not willing to give up which is a good trait to have. The vocabulary used is not too difficult and uses onomatopoeia's. The illustrations use lots of different colors that are appealing to the eye and would make the students realize what type of tasks the frog has to go through to get to his ending goal. Using a frog is a good way of not making it too serious and it has a little humor to keep the students entertained and engaged.

-first to second grade -This book uses unique vocabulary to tell about the daily life of a bullfrog. Each page has bold illustrations filling the entire page. It talks about the bullfrog's predators as well as the life cycle. Although it is a story it is very educational. -I found this book educational. It was kind of slow and mellow. This is not a silly or funny book. -With this book, you can begin to explore the life cycle of bullfrogs. A predator map would be fun to make. -first to second grade -This book uses unique vocabulary to tell about the daily life of a bullfrog. Each page has bold illustrations filling the entire page.
