This is a book of brief devotionals for the Lenten period. Each day includes a hymn, a brief biography of the hymnist, and a Bible verse. At first I thought that the readings were too brief, but I found myself compulsively turning pages so I could discover and enjoy the following day's hymn. In the end, I read this book over two days, instead of the intended 40, and feel very encouraged and blessed for having done so. This is a book of brief devotionals for the Lenten period. I love devotionals based on hymns. I am not a catholic but these hymns are ones that I know, so the fact that it is for Lent did not bother me. 40 days of hymns for the Easter (Lent) season. Very good.

This is an excellent Lenten devotional for Christians who appreciate some of the classic hymns of the faith. It is not written specifically for any denomination. Each devotion is short and to the point, I would assume to be approximately one page each. The reading for each day tells a little about the hymn writer or composer whose hymn appears for that day. The words to each hymn (not every verse, but most verses) can be used to meditate on about Jesus and His suffering and death on the cross for my sins. To me, it was wonderful to read or sing silently or quietly. Not all were ones that I am familiar with, but the words to each hymn, whether I knew it or not, had special meaning during this time. I highly recommend this Devotional for those who love some of the great hymns of the faith that could be associated with Lent and to anyone who has appreciated classic hymn books or devotions by Robert Morgan.

I chose to read this book in addition to the one I expected would be the bulk of my devotions during this 2015 Lenten season, but this is the one that I found really touched my heart over and over. I enjoyed reading the stories of the hymn-writers and then spent time singing and meditating on the words of the hymn for each day. I found myself challenged and blessed over and over. I had intended to read one devotion each day during Lent. However, my Kindle died, and I was unable to read for more than a week. Therefore, I read all the readings for that time period when I got my new Kindle. This was an interesting topic for a devotional. Each short message focused on a well-known Christian hymn. There was a little background on the author or composer and perhaps something about how the particular hymn came to be. Then the words of the hymn followed, with a short Scripture a I had intended to read one devotion each day during Lent. However, my Kindle died, and I was unable to read for more than a week. I read another of Robert Morgan's books last year on my Kindle, as a supplemental devotional. I enjoyed reading about the history of hymns and writers of these songs we sing, or used to sing, in church. This one was much the same, just shorter for Lent. I lost track a couple of days and couldn't remember if I had read the previous days entries, so I would double up (they aren't labeled except for Day 1-Day 40). So, I finished up a little early, as Lent is still ongoing :) I read another of Robert Morgan's books last year on my Kindle, as a supplemental devotional. This was okay but not what I was expecting. It was not a lot of reflection on the hymns and I hardly heard of any of these hymns.

An interesting look at some of the most popular Christian hymns and their origins. Each chapter is a different one to be read each day of Lent.

I look for spiritual meat in my devotionals - this one did not have any for me. I quit halfway through.

I enjoyed this book very much. Although I did not know a lot of the hymns, I enjoyed reading them as poetry and seeing the Bible verse that explains them.
