Colter Farrow is out for revenge. His foster father has been brutally murdered and young 16-year-old Colter feels compelled to see justice done. Along the way to that goal, he manages to ambush three criminals and take their bodies to the town of Sapinero, where he is unexpectedly not heralded as a hero but rather an interloper. The lawmen there have their own interests to protect and when they retaliate against Colter they leave him humiliated and scared and his girlfriend dead. What had been Colter’s compelling need for justice turns to a blood-boiling thirst for vengeance. The first novel in the Colter Farrow series by Frank Leslie (pseudonym for the brilliant Peter Brandvold), is a potboiler of a western. Plenty of violence is balanced by solid characterization. In a way, the plot here is like a Shakespearean tragedy, with our hero changing from a bright-eyed innocent lad to a hardened revenge-minded gunslinger. He’s young and he makes mistakes like a 16-year-old might make. At times his actions result from a lack of self-confidence while at others he throws caution to the wind. But all of it leads to the forming of a solid lead character that I will be happy to ride along with as his further adventures unfold.

I listened to the Graphic Audio version of this, and I don’t think it’s a “spoiler” to say that it’s not for the faint of heart! Colter makes the best of a bad “mission” with more evil than anyone should endure, but the character development is good, and the story is satisfying in its conclusion.

The author evoke action like few others. It is a good shoot 'em up. The author evoke action like few others. It is a good shoot 'em up.

Meh... Not the worst western I've read lately, but it was far from the best. Interesting story but the writing was just not there. Not bad enough to give up on the author, I think I will try one of his others. Meh... Not the worst western I've read lately, but it was far from the best. Guns of Sapinero Very good read. Colter paid for his maturation as a gunman with pain, bullets and killing. He leaves Sapinero no longer a kid, but as a grown man ready to make his own way in the world. Great character development and story.
