As a math teacher, I often looked for more challenging work for my gifted students. I also taught gifted education. I was very excited to receive this book for review for that reason. This is one of the better math extension workbooks for advanced students that I have seen so far. The activities are challenging and interesting as well as true extensions to what students may already be doing in the classroom. I also taught gifted education. I was very excited to receive this book for review for that reason. This is one of the better math extension workbooks for advanced students that I have seen so far. The activities are challenging and interesting as well as true extensions to what students may already be doing in the classroom. There are 20 lessons in the book on 5 key mathematical areas: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Some of the best lessons are: 1) understanding ratios through an activity where students pretend to run an ancient bazaar where bartering is the main form of transaction. Students must establish an exchange rate. 2) Understanding unit rate by creating advertisements comparing students' products to those of competitors. 3) DNA mapping of monsters to better understand greatest common factor and least common multiples. There are plenty more great lessons including one involving fantasy football. These lessons will be excellent for use with advanced learners, but some of them would be great extension activities for all students as well (such as the fantasy football lesson). At the end of each lesson, a practice page for common core testing is included. There is also an answer key at the back of the book. Many of the pages can be photocopied as worksheets for the students. As a visual learner, one thing I think would have made this an even better book was if it included some illustrations. I would have loved to have seen an example of what the monster DNA should look like as a finished product for example. Also, for the price the book carries, a sturdier book that would last longer would be nice. Just sitting on my shelf, the plastic has begun to wrinkle and pull away from the cover paper. Overall, this book carries a lot of good content for its price. Note: I received a free copy of this workbook from LibraryThing and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All my reviews are 100% honest and based on preset criteria.
