This is a parallel story to the novels "Virus-72 Hours to Live" and "Virus-Earth's Last Battle" which is from the perspective of the government and astronauts. Earth is attacked by a suspicious virus, and two computers find themselves without their programmers or any code which limits their operations. Because of the techniques used to program them, SIMPOC is embodied with a need to help humans and Julius is paranoid and will do anything to protect itself. The governments of the world begin to collapse, and the astronauts in space are trapped and must use their lifeboats to return to Earth. SIMPOC's only mission is to help, but the returning astronauts are attacked by Julius. Society continues to collapse, and the US government is forced to defend itself and finally seek refuge on an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic. When all seems to have been lost, the reason behind the virus emerges, and mankind is faced with a much greater threat.

4.5 ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ’ซ SIMPOC was more enjoyable as a stand alone than with the Virus. Although some of the computer jargon was lost on me, it was very creative and I was easily engrossed while listening to it. The primary focus on the computers with minimal human interaction was wholesome. I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook and recommend it. It was easier to follow than reading the book! (It provided an easy-to-follow Julian date line as well!) The second book lost the edge of the POV from SIMPOC. (It provided an easy-to-follow Julian date line as well!) The second book lost the edge of the POV from SIMPOC. It was more focused on the human characters, yet they lacked depth and emotion. Well, they grieved, which I give KUDOs, but there is no anger nor confusion, nor a direction to put down roots and come up with a game plan. Most importantly, it lacks urgency to create a new home, a plan to start over, or any other kind of permanent stability. As most of the main characters are not Joe Schmoe from timbuktu, but seasoned and supposedly experienced, eduacated leaders in various fields, it loses credibility as they interact with one another with little to no conviction and control of the situation. This will remain at 4 stars, as I still feel it is better than Virus. I will listen to Virus again and see if this provides a deeper insight and understanding. Honestly, it is doubtful, as Virus involves more POVs from the humans, and they seem to be less interesting and in control than SIMPOC, who is the newest and youngest member of the group.

SIMPOC: The Thinking Computer & Human Remnants : Ray Jay Perreault An interesting futuristic science fiction tale. Artificial inelegance computers, stranded astronauts, fast moving virus. I want to see where this series goes. The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed by Zachary Johnson. "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
