So I wanted to read a lot of graphic novels. They are on my 2018 tbr. This graphic novel is actually based on an original Bengali screenplay which is in turn a sequel to an established literary classic. The movie has been dubbed in multiple languages and all my Bengali friends are excited for it.So obviously when the graphic novel came out I grabbed it. The pictures are beautiful. The story is fast paced. One criticism tho, something I had regarding the first original literary classic as well, t So I wanted to read a lot of graphic novels. They are on my 2018 tbr. The story is fast paced. One criticism tho, something I had regarding the first original literary classic as well, that it is full of racial stereotypes. While it might have been the norm at the time the original book was written, these stererotypes seem a bit dated in 2017's December. But I still gave it a five star as it had been a wild ride and overall remarkably well done.

ডিসক্লেইমার : এই রিভিউ সবে শুরু। কোথায় গিয়ে থামবো জানি না। প্রচুর স্পয়লার আছে কিন্তু। তবু দেবের বিভূতিকমল যখন নিজে স্পয়লার দেবার নাম করে মুভি বেড়োনোর আগেই গল্প বলে দেন (এটা ধরে নিচ্ছি মার্কেটিং) তখন এটা পড়া যেতেই পারে। * * এটা রিভিউ না বলে খিল্লি বলাই ভাল। * * (view spoiler)[ সে এক পুরানো সেই দিনের কথা। এক ছিল গ্রাম; নাম ছিল তার কেউটিয়া (? এটা কি কমলবাবুর আমদানী নাকি এই নামটা পর্ব এক-এ ছিল ?); আর সেখানে থাকতো এক হীরের টুকরো ছেলে দেব। তার পোষাকী নাম শঙ্কর চৌধুরী। মাইরি বলছি। মলাট কে মলাট; পুরো দ ডিসক্লেইমার : এই রিভিউ সবে শুরু। কোথায় গিয়ে থামবো জানি না। প্রচুর স্পয়লার আছে কিন্তু। তবু দেবের বিভূতিকমল যখন নিজে স্পয়লার দেবার নাম করে মুভি বেড়োনোর আগেই গল্প বলে দেন (এটা ধরে নিচ্ছি মার্কেটিং) তখন এটা পড়া যেতেই পারে। * * এটা রিভিউ না বলে খিল্লি বলাই ভাল। * * (view spoiler)[ সে এক পুরানো সেই দিনের কথা। এক ছিল গ্রাম; নাম ছিল তার কেউটিয়া (? এটা কি কমলবাবুর আমদানী নাকি এই নামটা পর্ব এক-এ ছিল ?); আর সেখানে থাকতো এক হীরের টুকরো ছেলে দেব। তার পোষাকী নাম শঙ্কর চৌধুরী। মাইরি বলছি। মলাট কে মলাট; পুরো দেবের ছবিতে লাট। পড়ার পর, কার কাছে যেন শুনলাম, কোন শিল্পী নাকি আদৌ ছবিগুলো আঁকেননি। গ্রাফিক নভেল এ পুরো কম্পিউটার গ্রাফিক্সের কারসাজি! কে জানে! হবেও বা। সেই সূত্রে ক্ষমা-ঘেন্না করা গেল। গল্পে ঢুকি? আগের পর্ব মনে আছে? এদিকে হাতি, ওদিকে হাতি; তাদের মধ্যে ফাঁদে পড়া শঙ্কর; এটাই প্রথম সিন ছিল না? এবারেও সেই রকমই বেশ একটা হৈ হৈ রৈ রৈ ব্যাপার। হাতি তো বেশী দৌড়তে পারে না, তাই চিতাবাঘ (চিতাবাঘ চিতা নয় কিন্তু; হুঁ হুঁ বাবা, কমলবাবু হেব্বি চালাক; ১১০ কিমি থেকে পাক্কা ৫৮ কিমি প্রতি ঘন্টায় ব্যাপারটা গ্রিপে রেখেছেন। নিন্দুকেরা কিছু বলুক দেখি এবার!) করেছে তাড়া। শঙ্কর দৌড়চ্ছে, চিতাবাঘগুলো দৌড়চ্ছে; শঙ্কর দৌড়চ্ছে, চিতাবাঘগুলো দৌড়চ্ছে... ক্যামেরন সাহেবের অবতার এর সেই জ্যাক-সুলির ঝাঁপটা মনে আছে? বা গিবসন সাহেবের অ্যাপোক্যালিপ্টোর জাগুয়ার'স-প এর সেই তাড়া খাওয়ার পর ঝাঁপ? পাক্কা ওইভাবে ঝাঁপ দিল আমাদের দেব। কিন্তু জলে কুমীর ডাঙায় (চিতা)বাঘ প্রবাদটা তো মিথ্যে হওয়ার নয়, তাই জলে রাখা ছিল একটা কুমীর, বড় কালো কুমীর (আমাজনের বিখ্যাত কেইম্যান, এটা কিন্তু আমরা চুপি চুপি জানি)। কিন্তু সে ব্যাটা দেবের সাথে পারবে কেন? দেবের কাছে ছিল একটা ছুরি। প্যাঁক করে পুঁতে দিল সেটা কুমীরের পেটে। কুমীর বাবাজী চিৎপটাং আর দেবের ঘুমটাও গেল ভেঙে। আমার তো লোম খাঁড়া হয়ে গেল শুরুতেই। তারপর তো দেবের সাথে দেখা করতে এল অ্যানা। সে এক ভারী মিষ্টি মেয়ে। কি সুন্দর দেবকে আমন্ত্রণ জানালো এল ডোরাডো খুঁজতে যাবার। আগের পর্বে আলভারেজবাবুকে যেমন চুঁচড়োর লোক বানিয়ে ছেড়েছিলেন, সেই ঘটনা এখানে আর ঘটাননি। মেয়ে তো আবার আমার সাবজেক্টের ছাত্রী। নৃতত্ত্ব নিয়ে সারা পৃথিবী চষে বেড়িয়েছে। শুধু সোনার শহরটাই বাকী, যা বুঝলাম। দেব ছাড়া আর কেই বা উদ্ধার করবে! তা দেব ব্যাগ গোছালো, বাইনোকুলার আর বন্দুক পরীক্ষা করল, আর বেড়িয়ে পড়লো। আচ্ছা সান পাওলো, আর সান স্যান্টোস কি পাশাপাশি? অত ভূগোল জানি না বস। কমলবাবু নিশ্চই জানেন। আমি শুধু বুঝলাম না, অ্যানারা ঠিক থাকে কোথায়!! তা মার্কো মশাই তো রেগে কাঁই। মার্কো মশাই অ্যানার বাবা। দেব ছোকরা কি মহা-আমাজন উদ্ধার করবে! এই একটা লোককে নরমাল লেগেছে আমার। সারা বইটা জুড়ে এই প্রশ্নটা আমিও নিজেকে করে গেছি। এবার আবার সবাই দল বেঁধে সাও পাওলো চললো!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????? তারপর তো বুক বেঁধে ঘোড়ায় চড়ে যাত্রা শুরু। তিনদিনের দিন জল তেষ্টা পেল ওদের। একটা নদীতে জল খেল ওরা। দেবের ওয়াটার বটলটা ঘ্যাম। একদম হিপ-ফ্লাস্কের মত দেখতে। এক চুমুক জল খেয়েই বাকী সাত দিন কাটিয়ে দিল। মাইরি বলছি। ওই বোতলে দুচুমুকের বেশী জল ধরাতে পারলে আমি কাল থেকে নিজের নাম বদলে উট রাখবো। তারপর এল এক ভ্যাম্পেয়ার। ঠিক ব্রাম সাহেবের মত চুকুস করে কামড়ে দিল অ্যানার ঘাড়ে। আমি তো ভাবছি এত দুটো শ্বদন্ত গজালো মেয়ের। ও মা! তার আগেই এল র্যাটেল সাপ। সে ব্যাটা কখন ঘাড়ে চাপলো দেবের, দেবও বোঝেনি_____আমিও বুঝিনি। যাই হোক গল্পে অনেক কিছু আসবে। সাঁকো আসবে, জাগুয়ার আসবে, ক্রীতদাস আসবে, অনেক গুলো ইন্ডিয়ান গ্রাম আসবে, টাইটানিক আসবে, ব্লক লোভেট আসবে, সোনা-চোর আসবে, জলপ্রপাত আসবে, আর সব শেষে আসবে অ্যানাকোন্ডা.... অত কষ্ট করে জেলো দিদিমনি যে কেন অ্যানাকোন্ডা মারতে গেল কে জানে! দেবের যা ফুঁয়ের জোড়। চার ফুঁয়ে অ্যানাকোন্ডাকে কেলিয়ে পাট করে দিল। আইডিয়াটা বোধয় সেই মেল গিবসন থেকেই ঝাপা! অবশ্য বুনিপটার সাইজ বড় ছিল, থপথপে। অ্যানাকোন্ডা স্লিম। যাইহোক। তারপর বেশী কিছু নেই। পরের ঘটনাটুকুর জন্য ম্যাকানাস গোল্ড দেখে নিলেই হবে। ও হ্যাঁ এতদিন পরে দেবের গালে হাল্কা দাড়ি দেখা গেল। রোজ বোধহয় শেভ করতো। শেষের কদিন বোর হয়ে গিয়ে আর কাটেনি। সিনেমায় দেবের ফ্যানরা এই সিনটা দেখে যা সিটি দেবে না! আমি তো ভেবেই উত্তেজিত হয়ে পড়ছি। (hide spoiler)] তা এই হল গিয়ে গল্প। আশা করি গেল বারের তুমলায় মুভিতে কাজ আর একটু ভালো হবে। তবে সত্যি বলছি, ওই ছোঁড়ার ওপর আমার কোন ভরসা নেই। এটাও আদৌ শঙ্করের গল্প নয়। এটা বাংলায় লেখা জেমস রোলিং। যিনি লিখেছেন, বানান ভুল করেছেন; যিনি ছাপিয়েছেন, তিনিও চেক করেননি। কমিক্স বা গ্রাফিক নভেলে কেউ সুন্দর ভাষা বা সাহিত্য এক্সপেক্ট করে না; তবু কিছুদিন যাবৎ বিদেশী গ্রাফিক নভেলের সুবাদে বা আমাদের ময়ূখ চৌধুরী পড়ে বুঝেছি আপাতদৃষ্টিতে চোখে না পড়লেও একটা সুন্দর ছবিতে গল্প কিরকম ভাবে লেখা হতে পারে। কমলবাবু ও তাঁর ভেঙ্কটেশ মুভিস এই জায়গাটা আমার নজরে সেইভাবে ছুঁতে পারেননি।

I remember stacking up my favourite comics and hardly sharing it with anyone. But, I guess with the advent of TV and Internet, paperback comic books have suffered a setback. But, I got a chance to relive those good old childhood memories when I got hold of Amazon Obhijan. This graphic novel by Kamaleswar Mukherjee is an amazing treat for readers. The story of Shankar and Anna, two explorers in the land of Ama Our childhood would have been incomplete without comic books. They were so close to us. I remember stacking up my favourite comics and hardly sharing it with anyone. But, I guess with the advent of TV and Internet, paperback comic books have suffered a setback. But, I got a chance to relive those good old childhood memories when I got hold of Amazon Obhijan. This graphic novel by Kamaleswar Mukherjee is an amazing treat for readers. The story of Shankar and Anna, two explorers in the land of Amazon narrated through amazing illustrations was a perfect read. Inspired from Chander Pahar, an adventure-filled novel by Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay, this novel takes the story forward, where Shankar ends up with exploring the mythical city of golf- El Dorado in Amazon with an adventurer, Anna amidst natural calamities and the beast of the jungle. The tale is gripping and easy to follow. The illustrations are so apt such that the flow of the story is maintained properly. The novel not only talks about the adventures, the ferocious creatures or their struggles. But, it also talks about human relationships and their dynamics. It shows how two strangers interact in times of difficulty and how they work together to emerge victorious. The novel also talks about the beauty of the Amazon and gives a vivid description about the flora and fauna of the place. A movie has also been made from the novel which I am eager to watch. I am sure it will be as good as the graphic novel. I would love to read from the author or upcoming novels in this series. He has done amazing work in a genre which might have been gradually fading away, but this is surely a comeback. This kind of novels can be enjoyed both by adults and kids. Overall, it was a great read with amazing visual effects/illustrations by Arghya Das. Kudos to Kamaleswar Mukherjee for coming up with this graphic novel.
