Paul G. Brodie is one of these authors. Mr. Brodie breaks down the mystery of self-publishing ebooks with this short, concise book. Beginning with the obligatory cautions that your results may be different, the book moves on to advice on how to get your book ready for publication. Once that hurdle is past, the author shares the launch secrets he has researched and found to be successful. Mr. Brodie details which companies to use and when, what works best when it comes to raising the price of your book, and how to generate other revenue streams. I felt this book stepped out past the basics presented by other books, such as his suggestions on how to handle your book launch and what advertising companies he found beneficial to work with. Mr. Brodie does offer additional services, although these are over and above the knowledge in the book and do not have to be used in order to apply the knowledge taught in “Book Publishing for Beginners.” To me, reading this book is like doing additional research before dipping your toe in the self-publishing waters. Four stars.

With succinct chapters, Paul Brodie instructs new authors in the art of successful self-publishing. I’ve read 300-page books on the same subject with less to say than this one! Mr. Brodie has distilled the essence of what needs to be said and left the fluff behind. I love it. New authors will find what they need to know about editing; book covers, book descriptions, converting and uploading Kindle books, and even about getting reviews. New authors will find what they need to know about editing; book covers, book descriptions, converting and uploading Kindle books, and even about getting reviews. Because of lack of experience, few authors know anything about product launches. Although book launches include almost infinite possibilities, Mr. Brodie has zeroed in on some approaches that are sure to help any author gain more sales. To make things more obviously practical, Mr. Brodie has included case studies for how he launched his books. He openly shares what worked and what didn’t. One thing I like is the fact that he "names names." He isn’t selfish about telling us who does his editing, cover designs, or the promotional sites he uses. He has carefully recorded the results he got for each of these promotion techniques. He even gives a delayed marketing plan for a free book promotion that would only cost $85 and a paid 99¢ strategy. I appreciate the inclusion of audio books and paperback to the content. Those who neglect these formats are leaving money on the table. Although the subject is complex, he gives introductory material to get authors rolling with mailing lists and lead magnets. These open the way for associated backend deals when books are published. In fact, many experienced published authors should consider expanding their revenue streams based on the new authority they have gained after publishing their book. The author’s final chapter opens the way for some thought about these possibilities as well. Overall, this book is an excellent tool for new authors, but because it is so concise, it is also a great crash course for more experienced writers as well. I have enjoyed reading it and expect to see it soaring above my feeble efforts in this same niche of books. Well, maybe not. The author has shared some things I need to think about to boost my sales!

Simple, basic book on how to launch your book on Amazon. It's an easy, gentle read. The author includes details of his results, including which services he used, how much he spent, how many books he sold or had downloaded free, and his reasoning behind his recommendations. That's the main value in this book. Any time anyone recommends using Fiverr for cover design, I cringe. In this author's case, you wouldn't mistake his books for traditionally published books, but his covers are definitely bett Simple, basic book on how to launch your book on Amazon. That's the main value in this book. Any time anyone recommends using Fiverr for cover design, I cringe. In this author's case, you wouldn't mistake his books for traditionally published books, but his covers are definitely better than most Fiverr work I see. One thing I noticed: at the end of each chapter, he makes a different offer--usually something free, and always something completely relevant to what you just read. This is about the same ad ratio as another book I just read on launching your kindle book, but with one huge difference: these ads feel natural and helpful, not spammy and grabby. I would have thought it would be impossible to put that many ads in a book without making them annoying. Highlights: Blue highlight | Page: 5 There is a great article from New York Times Bestselling Author, Kevin Kruse, which explains how to write sales copy that I highly recommend - you can check it out here. Blue highlight | Page: 16 I typically choose a category that is not highly competitive for the first category and then find a tougher category for the second. For overall ranking, look for the top three books in the categories that are ranked from 5000-10000 overall in Amazon Kindle. Blue highlight | Page: 16 There are many categories to look at and it’s important to find a category that has the top ranked books ranked around 10,000 to 20,000 in Amazon Kindle. Blue highlight | Page: 19 Be sure to send follow up messages to your potential reviewers too. I would recommend sending out the advance copies a week before you upload your book to Amazon. Once you upload to Amazon send a follow up message to ask if they had a chance to read the book. Let them know that the book is uploaded and is available for 99 cents and that you could really use their support by downloading a copy and leaving you a review. Blue highlight | Page: 21 My strategy is to have a free launch for 3.5 to 4.5 days. This strategy generates a lot of positive publicity and helps with my philosophy of getting the book into as any hands as possible. As I have several back end products, including both motivational speaking and coaching as my goal is maximum exposure for the back end. Blue highlight | Page: 23 10, I scheduled a Freebooksy promotion for day #2 and it was huge. At the end of day #2 I had 1619 downloads and was #1 in my categories and also entered the top 100 in Amazon Kindle overall with a peak rank of #94. Freebooksy costs $80.00 and is well worth the investment. Blue highlight | Page: 29 Kindle. He suggested that I immediately raise the price on both books to $2.99 so that I could go from making 34 cents a book to over two dollars. I agreed to take the leap of faith. He told me that the book sales might plummet for a couple of days but that the book would rebound once the Amazon Algorithm kicks in. The Amazon Algorithm, while a little Blue highlight | Page: 33 The only paid promotions I used for this launch were BKnights on Fiverr (well worth it) and Freebooksy $80.00 (worth at least 2500 downloads on this launch overall). With BKnights I bought both the $5.00 promotion and the $5.00 add on to be featured in their daily newsletter. I found out during this launch that the daily newsletter promotion is only a link to their website and the newsletter add on is not worth getting. I would suggest sticking to the basic $5.00 promotion as it is a great value. Blue highlight | Page: 39 Here is an example of what I am now doing for all of my book launches going forward. Blue highlight | Page: 43 I am following similar concepts from the free strategy with having the book at 99 cents for the next 4.5 days. This is what I use. Blue highlight | Page: 43 Reading Deals promotion. They have 15,000 readers and it only costs $15.00. Blue highlight | Page: 43 Books Butterfly promotion. The promotion I got was the $25.00 silver promotion. Blue highlight | Page: 44 Buck Books promotion ($35.00). Blue highlight | Page: 44 with BookZio that I paid $29.00 for. The Grande option costs $19.99 and they have an option for pay an additional $10.00 for have your book listed as the first one Blue highlight | Page: 46 I bought a condenser microphone called the Blue Snowball ICE Condenser Microphone and a pop filter from Amazon. The cost was around $56.00 for both and I downloaded the Audacity program for free, which would allow me to record the book. Blue highlight | Page: 48 when recording, you will also want to pause before speaking at the start of each chapter for 2-3 seconds and then start to speak. At the end of each chapter also leave 2-3 seconds of silence. Blue highlight | Page: 49 Once your recording is complete, you will want to send the files to someone who can edit and remaster your recording. Blue highlight | Page: 61 A strategy that I have learned from Kevin Kruse, the author of the amazing foreword of this book, is to make offers for each chapter of a book. You identify a theme in the chapter and offer something that correlates, then have all of the items in one bundle.
