Easy to read, understand and learn This book is for everyone, whether you're a family member or someone with substance use disorder. It's written in the voice of Dr Labor, Frank language as if you are listening to her speak. It's a refreshing perspective to have a doctor share her experience and her expertise. You will definitely learn about the disease itself, how it affects multiple areas of the brain. I highly recommend this. It's a quick read packed with info to give you better understanding. This is a fantastic book for anyone who wants to understand addiction better. Dr. Labor breaks down the science to a cellular level while still keeping it easy to understand and, at times, funny. I have used her YouTube video for years to teach my students in Mental Health Nursing. This book is a more in depth explanation and also goes on to explain the treatments used. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more.

Easy to read, straight forward, honest with many good takeaways that do not come across as preachy or holier than thou.

I absolutely loved this book! I truely find the study of addiction fascinating. I'm in recovery myself. This book hands down the best piece of literature I have read explaining addiction, And the only peice that talks about every aspect! Cause addiction isn't just about the drug use! The way she not only talked about every aspect but how she related it to her own recovery has most definitely helped me with mine! Thank you! I absolutely loved this book! I just finished this amazing book! I wish I’d known all she has taught here while my son was still alive. Had I only understood what he was going through! This isn’t just a book by some intelligent doctor trying to explain addiction in terms we can comprehend; this is a book by someone who has actually walked through the fire herself. She has an amazing talent for bringing us to a level of understanding to comprehend exactly what we need in order to grasp the inner workings of addiction. Her writ I just finished this amazing book! Her writing style is fun, and very easy to follow while also getting her point across loud & clear. In the past, when I’ve needed someone to understand addiction, and how we got here in this mess, I always recommended the book Dreamland by Sam Quinones, and Dr Labor’s Kent State Recovery Rocks video. I will now be adding this book to the list. Great read!

This is a solid read for anyone coming to terms with a loved one's addiction. As a past addict and current treatment professional, Dr. Labor offers a unique insight into the whole process. I'm training to be a substance abuse counselor myself, and the way she simplified some of these concepts made me cringe (thus 4 stars instead of 5)... but this book isn't meant for professionals. It's meant for laypeople who are struggling to understand this disease. Through the course of the novel, Dr. Labor This is a solid read for anyone coming to terms with a loved one's addiction. I think she succeeds in doing just that.

Fantastic book. Very clear writing on an important subject. The authors points are direct and understandable. Hum our that is actually funny and something I never thought I would say this about a book. Compassionate. Addicts. There loved ones should read this book as a starter to what life is about to hand you. People in the business should read this for a refresher. The most interesting point is on addiction as a disease. Great stuff. To add always drink water. Ha

This is probably one of the best books I have ever read on the subject of “why” someone biologically or mentally becomes addicted to any substance. Since starting to read it, I have bought copies for two addicts in my life, as well as for others in my family. Dr. Labor’s explanations are relatable and straight forward~ and fun to read! And that says everything, because if anyone can take a book on addiction and make it enjoyable and fun, that’s a miracle in and of itself.

This book is smart, funny as hell and a must for addicts AND their families. It explains in great detail what goes on in an addicts brain and why they do some of the insane things they do. Dr. Labor has written a gem that will make you laugh, cry and most of all begin to understand and heal. Buy this book and put it on the coffee table for everyone in the family to read.

Awesome read This book was amazing and hilarious and very relatable to everyone's life.

A great read for those that want to understand more about addicts and addiction. Presented in easy to understand terms - not too science-y as the author herself would say! Dr. Labor is honest with her own history of addiction and doesn’t mince words when talking about it. Highly recommend for those family and friends whose loved one just can’t/won’t stop.

Real talk! If you ever wondered what addicts are thinking or why they do what they do..this is the book for you. The behaviors of an addict are well explained as is the thought process that kept many addicts in active addiction. Each addict has a way out-this book shows this.
