Generally a very good explanation of what profit maximisation at all costs can cause. Good statistics and good introduction in the first half of the book. It really resonates and makes you think. The end feels a bit abrupt though. There is a bit of a lack of concrete action to take other than being aware of this. It also fails to acknowledge potential issues of the system. How to make sure it’s fair and people don’t exploit it and overly focus on it in the way GDP has seen etc. It seems like the problem with previous money-focused metrics was that they were not intended to be so religiously follow as they ended up being. How do we make sure any new metric doesn’t end up the same way? These things might be beyond the scope of the book, but it might be worthwhile at least mentioning these issues exist as otherwise people can dismiss this book as biased or utopian, which would be a great shame.

I once had a friend explain that frivolous spending today was stealing from my future self, which stuck with me. Bentoism is a more robust abstraction of that advice and a decision-making framework that I'll be thinking about for a while.
