Varied and interesting tales While I loved a few of these stories, there were also a few that I wasn’t feeling. I believe it’s a personal taste thing as the parts of the ones I wasn’t too keen on were written well but I couldn’t bring myself to finish. I might come back to finish those eventually. Overall, I think this is a great anthology with a lot of variety and fun!

Five stars, just because I think having a bunch of 1st-in-series urban fantasy novels free and bundled like this is both a cool and good idea. (I'll leave more detailed reviews on the individual books' pages as I read them.) Deadline (Blood Trails: Book One) - Jennifer Blackstream 9. Fury Rising (Fury Unbound: Book One) - Yasmine Galenorn 10. Beyond the Night (The Heroes of New Vegas: Book One) - Colleen Gleason I'll update this review as I read each of the stories included but I can tell you its worth grabbing the anthology just for Pippa DaCosta's contribution! Shoot the Messenger by Pippa DaCosta - 5 Stars: I'm a huge fan of Pippa DaCosta, she's yet to write a book I didn't love and the way she's always coming up with new ideas and trying new genres keeps her books fresh and exciting. As soon as she mentioned a new series with the tag line "fae in space" I was sold but then she threw in reverse harem and that just sealed the deal. I honestly think that Shoot the Messenger is her best book yet and that's really saying something considering she's written so many of my favourite series (the Soul Eater, Veil and 1000 Revolution just for starters!). This is a futuristic sci-fi with a fantasty twist set in a time when the fae have been hidden from the humans for over 1000 years since the last big war. As the humans created more and more tek to keep up with fae magic our world became harder for the fae to survive in and since the last battle they've retreated to their home-world. No-one is under any illusion that the war is over but so far the fae have kept their distance and the humans have started to feel safe. Kesh has a unique ability to hide from tek and she uses that to remain off the grid, she earns her money delivering messages for the underworld but her life is turned upside down when the recipient of one of her deliveries is killed and she is framed for the murder. She is determined to prove her innocence but her evidence has been stolen by a warfae, someone who shouldn't even be in the same star system, and she has a Marshal hot on her tail and ready to bring her in. I really don't want to go into any more detail than that because this is one of those books where you just need to sit back and enjoy the ride. This is a book with layer upon layer of secrets, lies, betrayals and so much more. Every time you think you have something figured out Pippa DaCosta will sucker punch you with yet another twist that you didn't see coming. The story is told from Kesh's point of view but none of the characters you'll meet, including our narrator, are completely good or evil. They're all hiding deep dark secrets and I think we've only scratched the surface of what is there to uncover. Kesh is a badass character, she's a fighter who knows how to look after herself but at the same time she has a vulnerable streak and she's also not always the most trustworthy person to have around. Life has taught her to expect betrayal and that it's better to be the one holding the knife rather than the one getting stabbed in the back so she doesn't always make choices I'd agree with but I found myself understanding her actions all the same. As far as the other characters go I'm intrigued by both Kellee and Talon but we don't know either of them well enough to have uncovered their secrets yet. Both guys have done things that make me question their motives but they're also pretty sexy in their own ways so I'm definitely looking forward to spending more time with all three of the main characters! I loved Kesh's AI buddy Sota too, he's not around for the whole book but he brought a lot of humour to the story so I'm hoping we'll see more of him as the series continues. Shoot the Messenger is the start of an exciting new series and it's one I can't wait to continue. If you like stories with multifaceted, three dimensional characters and even more complex plots, books that will screw with your mind and leave your head spinning, then this one is definitely for you. Bravo, Pippa, bravo!

The rating is the average rating between all books (4.3). Individual ratings and a few words for each book: Unquiet Souls (Project Demon Hunters: Book One) - Christine Pope --- 5 stars --- I've loved this book. What I liked most about it is the supernatural being inserted so subtly in the real world. The story is about a demonologist that gets his own reality show and he partners up with a parapsychologist (she's the skeptic of the pair, but not for long!). We get ghost and demon activity and wit The rating is the average rating between all books (4.3). We get ghost and demon activity and witch-like stuff, but the equilibrium between the real and the supernatural is wonderfully balanced. It has many other qualities, suffice to say I'm going to read the rest of the series. Misbegotten (L.A. Nocturne: Book One) - Kat Parrish --- 2 stars --- I gave two stars only because it takes effort to build a universe and write the actual books. However, I did not like much about them. The story was boring and the writing was plain and I felt that some scenes were badly described. It took effort to make sense of them. Soul Marked (I Bring the Fire: Part Seven) - C. Gockel --- 5 stars --- While reading it, I realized read the first book in the series a while ago. I didn't pursue the series because it felt as too long for the reading list I had back then, even though I liked the story. This book gives us a different point of view in the same universe and, what is absolutely wonderful, IT IS A STAND ALONE BOOK! You actually get to the epilogue of the characters, something that NEVER happens in a free anthology. Because this impressed me, I'm probably gonna end up reading the whole series. Dark Descent (The Arondight Codex: Book One) - Nicole R. Taylor --- 3 stars --- Somewhat better written then "Misbegotten", but it was too close to Cassandra Clare's work for my taste. I don't say that it was plagiarized, but I got bored of demonhunter groups/schools that fight with shiny weapons. Reborn in Fire (Untamed Elements: Book One) - Kasey Mackenzie --- 4 stars --- I liked that it was about elementals and the universe was interesting. Already reading the 2nd book (although it's because the author also offered it for free through another book event, otherwise I think I would have waited on buying it). Sacrificed in Shadow (The Ascension Series: Book One) - SM Reine --- 5 stars --- The writing is wonderful, because it manages to convey the feeling of a situation. The book starts off with a scene that shows off the ugliness of the world and while demons are a big part of the universe, take those out and you have a snapshot of some of the worst-off social scenes. This book shows you the uglier sides of the world, but spectacularly written. I will now read the rest of the series because I don't want to the ugly sides, but the book is worth the reading is the subject is up your alley. Shoot the Messenger (Messenger Chronicles: Book One) - Pippa DaCosta --- 3 stars --- Score lowered because I dislike the mixture of fantasy (the fae) and sci-fi (spaceships and colonization and tech is called "tek"). Story - ok, writing - ok, but not what I like. Deadline (Blood Trails: Book One) - Jennifer Blackstream --- 3 stars --- Village witch turns into big city private investigator. The characters seemed unbelievable at times and I did not figure out how the PI reached certain conclusions, not did I feel that she acted logically given some situations. Meh. Fury Rising (Fury Unbound: Book One) - Yasmine Galenorn --- 5 stars --- One of my favorite universe builders, she is the reason I picked up this anthology. Beyond the Night (The Heroes of New Vegas: Book One) - Colleen Gleason --- 4 stars --- Interesting dystopia. I haven't decided if I want to read the rest of the series, but I liked this book. I took away one star because the sex scenes are so explicit that they get boring. I mean, really now, if I want to read sex, I want some things left to the imagination, not every moan described in a long-winded phrase.

Taylor Reborn in fire - Kasey Mackenzie Sacrificed in Shadow - SM Reine Shoot the messenger- Pippa DaCosta This would have to be one of the stories I liked the least, in trying to tie the fae into space adventure it just didn’t work for me. Unquiet souls - Christine Pope Misbegotten- Kat Parrish Soul Marked - C. Gockel Dark Descent- Nicole R. Taylor Reborn in fire - Kasey Mackenzie Sacrificed in Shadow - SM Reine Shoot the messenger- Pippa DaCosta This would have to be one of the stories I liked the least, in trying to tie the fae into space adventure it just didn’t work for me. Although it did start well I felt that it just lost the initial thread of the story and tried to pack too much in. Kesh is a messenger on a planet call Calicato. She delivers a message to a prominent union figure and he is killed, with the blame falling on her. She quickly discovers that the real killer is a warfae and he steals her drone Sota. Considering she is an engineered alien who ran away from the fae and is highly recognisable to them, her desire to retrieve her drone and the constant jeopardy she puts herself and everyone around her in is ridiculous. Deadline - Jennifer Blackstream Fury Rising - Yasmine Galenorn Gaia was furious with the world and in a cataclysmic event destroyed big portions of it, throwing open world gates and allowing magic and all kinds of species to mix together. Fury is a theosian, her mother when pregnant immersed in magic that changed the DNA of the foetus into a minor goddess. Along with some amazing abilities and powers her life is tied to the goddess Hecate. When an old world item that can control weather is taken by a wizard cult that wants to open the chaos gate and totally destroy the world, Hecate sends fury to retrieve the thunderstrike. With Jason and Tam two people she has known most her life and the spirit guide Queet fury discovers the Leader of the Order of the black mist is just like her. Beyond the night- Colleen Gleason The fact that at the start of this story the author writes a bit of an explanation, is her saving grace. 5 men wake up in a cave 50years into the future, Elliot is a doctor who has picked up some extra abilities as well as several of the men in his group. Trying to find answers to what happened to the world they stumble on a group of teenagers getting attacked by monsters called gangas. Meeting jade, a runner, Saving the teens they take them back to the town Envy where the meet Lou Waxnicki who was alive when the world changed and he and his brother have started a resistance. The group learn about strangers who appear to be responsible for the world changing event and there are links and events that will be explored in further books.

Most books mediocre or ok. First 3 books of the 10 were the best the rest were closer to 2 stars. This the reason for the average score
