When I first looked at this book, I didn't think it had much to offer, but on second look, this is an excellent resource for someone like me with little background in animation. It's a good starting place for home-produced animation. It describes in understandable terms the technical differences between film, NTSC, PAL, HD, and other motion formats. It also explains industry terms, pros and cons of industrial and free software, how several different types of animation work (whether stop-motion, hand-drawn, or Flash), how to compose your shots, how to set up audio, and the pick-up patterns for microphone types. The sidebars include excellent resource information. The accompanying DVD has tutorials that complement the book really well. I especially enjoyed watching the stop-motion tutorial: the book had a good explanation, but some of what I couldn't imagine with still images (e.g., how to get rabbit ears out of a mold, how to sculpt a new mouth from the same mold) became much more clear when I saw the video.
