This is a clean, inspirational western with two Christian people, prayer, and Bible verses. Two people will be brought together, paired up by ‘matchmakers,’ and yet, this story is full of angst, mystery, suspense, secrets, and trouble. Alanna needs a new start, but this time, she has her infant niece, Winnie, to consider. Hard work, doing without, making others happy has been what Alanna has known most of her life. Caring for Winnie brings her comfort and joy. Donald Dill is a man who likes order and expects things to fall into place as he schedules. He needs a wife and is shocked when he meets his mail-ordered bride, Alanna. His neat world and written schedules are getting ready to be turned upside down—and that doesn’t work well for him. Life on his inherited horse ranch in Wyoming has come with claim-jumpers, swindlers, wolves, and mail-order brides with secrets. Now, it looks like another one has arrived. The plot of this story is full of secrets—and Donald is a man who wants everything black and white with no gray areas. Alanna Foley arrives with an infant in tow—and he is upset. In a letter from the matchmakers, there was no mention of a baby—her being a widow—or is she lying about being a Christian woman? No, this will never do. While he must allow her and the child to stay until further arrangements can be made, he doesn’t have to like it. Then when he shows Alanna his list of how he expects everything to be done, she informs him she is happy to do things, but they may not be done in his exact order. Donald Dill’s life is going to change—whether he wants it to or not. This story is full of angst, upsets, doubts, indecisions, mistrust, and throw-in questions about the baby, her father, and troublemakers. Not everyone is honest and upfront with information. With Donald’s dealings with people trying to take what isn’t theirs, is he now facing another woman trying to deceive him? Secrets will lead to problems—but the truth could even be more harmful. Will Donald and Alanna find happiness? Winnie seems to be the angst and pleasure between these two—will nearly losing her open their eyes? "I believe our path in life is a path together."

She was not his first mail-order-bride either with previous ones being gold diggers or having some other problem. There had been land swindlers to run off. So when Alanna showed up with a baby in tow that he had not been informed about, he was on high alert. He was not believing much of what she was telling him, but it sure was hard for him not to fall under Winnie's spell. He had once worked on a ranch with lots of babies, so he knew how to calm them. Him and Winnie were soon quick friends. He and Alanna were falling for each other, but he knew she was hiding something from him. As long as he could not trust her he could not marry her. He was looking for someone that was perfect. He could not see that Alanna never complained about anything, never asked for anything for herself, and worked extremely hard all the time. This was somewhat of an emotional read at times with people showing strong biased opinions, because they chose to hear what they wanted to hear or believe. The story shows how they gradually relax with each other, although he knows that Alanna is holding something back, which he finds extremely difficult to accept as he requires total honesty. Ultimately he has to decide whether to accept Alanna and Winnie or to send them away. Set with a strong background of faith this again shows how difficult it was for Mail Order Brides and their potential husbands to form relationships without the normal getting to know each other phase that we take so much for granted nowadays. I received an advance copy of this book from the author, however this did not influence my review of the book and I also purchased it on release.

The author has written a sweet and heartwarming story full of lots of human emotions, some not so pretty. This is Alanna Foley and Donald Dill's story and the character development is excellent. Neither Alanna nor Donald have necessarily had an easy life, which is reflected in the way they look at things. Donald sends for a MOB with specific demands but when Alanna arrives she is not at all what he had requested plus she had an undisclosed baby which she claimed was her sister's who had died. Alanna and Donald Dill For a simple mail-order bride tale this had plenty of twists in it. It started right off with Stephanie and Aggie and continued and these were not just bumps in the road either. I liked the characters but Alanna was special. All her life she had taken the back seat making sure her mother and sister had everything first. Then when things start to look up events occur that tear the hope of happiness down. A woman, an infant and a hard headed man I enjoyed reading this book, although it did take a crazy turn towards the end. I gave this book four stars because I found Donald’s continued judgement of Alanna a bit much when she was clearly a good woman with a lot of love to give. I still enjoyed reading this story. it is great to be able to read a book whose characters believe in God and are trying to follow His plan for their lives.

The first book in the Mail Order Brides of Pine Crossing a well written story of a man that can not trust and a woman trying to do the right thing. Alanna Healy, her niece Winnie, and Donald Dill who is a strict and structured man's story. There is drama, twists, turns, villains, a not nice reverend, trust in God and finally seeing what is right in front of his face. I enjoyed reading. Mail order brides truly had to be desperate to head out to meet an unknown man and to arrive in the town of Pine Crossing, proud home of three tents. There was a total breakdown of communication between Donald Dill and his mail order bride, Alanna. Mistrust and secrets keep both parties from truly talking to the other. Kathleen Ball has given us a tale that will have you wanting to pick both of them up and shaking them. Very enjoyable.

Alanna This was an unusual story which I did enjoy very much. Alanna had applied to be a mail order bride. She finally arrived and Donald her intended was surprised when she arrived with a baby. He didn’t want to take her to his ranch, but Alina told him, she made it clear about the baby to the match maker. This story has several struggles and you will enjoy the end result.
