Eight (8) out of 17 stories in this book of short story collections were my favorites. Notably, these stories include Lance of Kanana, Black Beauty, and The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. Notably, these stories include Lance of Kanana, Black Beauty, and The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle. When I started reading this collection, I thought that adventure stories will be all about travelling, meeting dangers along the way to finally accomplish a mission at hand. But as the Foreword of the book said, adventure is as wide as the world can be. It can take many forms. Sometimes, adventure calls for courage against opposition. That doesn't always include travelling, right? But that's adventure in itself as the collection would've pointed out. So does the call to responsibility, loyalty, kindness, and even friendship. Adventure can take many forms. As the Foreword said, "Adventure is life". So, adventure is that, it's not like travelling per se. It calls forth from the character in the stories to stand steadfast and meet challenges that life has thrown their way. Sherlock Holmes meet it with his unmatched ingenuity in tracking the suspect; courage when Mafatu traverses the stormy seas; or simply the willingness to go out of one's routine life in Cusi's Hidden Valley to find out what's out there. For sure, adventure presents the adventurer the fear and challenge of the unknown and uncertainty one has not yet faced before. Pirates, a grumpy old duke, a joust duel opponent, or a cruel stable master present those challenges to the characters personified, yet the adventure lies still there. Adventure is not just what happens along the way. Those can splendidly be the people that happens to us. And those can be very real. I could say that my view of adventure has been widened by this collection. It has been changed for the better.
