    There are several really good interviews and essays in this terribly designed book about what it's like and what it means to be an art director in different fields of work (yet there seems a weightier emphasis on magazines). You get a glimpse into the actual working conditions of certain directors, how their experiences and perspectives influenced their work, and how their work influenced others. In one of his many essays Heller writes, "An art director is part therapist, part father confessor, There are several really good interviews and essays in this terribly designed book about what it's like and what it means to be an art director in different fields of work (yet there seems a weightier emphasis on magazines). You get a glimpse into the actual working conditions of certain directors, how their experiences and perspectives influenced their work, and how their work influenced others. In one of his many essays Heller writes, "An art director is part therapist, part father confessor, and part enabler. He is the conduit through which good art is published. He separates the wheat from the chaff (and usually keeps the former). An art director is a talent scout. He or she may not be able to do what an illustrator does, but knows exactly what one is capable of doing." I started reading a borrowed copy from the library, I finished reading a bought copy from Abe.
